Our trip through Australia took us from Grays Point in southern Sydney, to the coast of Victoria, into SA, up through the Flinders Ranges, across the Oodnadatta track to Coober Pedy, all the way to Darwin, back down the Stuart Highway and across the Northern Territory into the sunshine state, and then back south to home.

Here are some tips and highlights from week 1 of our trip:

Week 1. – Sydney through to the Great Ocean Road.

Drop into the Dog on the Tuckerbox in Gundagai, a great place to stop, revive & survive. Depending on the time of year, a day trip into the Victorian alps is a must. Mt Buffalo offers very accessible tobogganing & snow play - The kids absolutely loved it. We headed straight down to the coast of Victoria to a place called Kilcunda, which is a great place to base yourself for a visit to the fairy penguins at Phillip Island, this is a must for both kids & adults. If it’s within your budget, pay the extra $30 per family for the penguin parade package, it offers a more personalised up-close experience.

To access the Great Ocean road, consider the Sorrento to Queenscliff car ferry; it works out to be a little cheaper than the fuel you would use and is a great experience crossing the entry of Port Philip Bay. The drive along the Mornington Peninsula also offers majestical views along the way.

Your first stop should be the gateway to the Great Ocean Road in Torquay. Torquay hosts one of Australia’s most famous surfing beaches – Bells Beach. The endless perfect right-hander definitely lives up to its name and is one of the most picturesque beaches I have experienced with deep blue water and golden sand tucked away under the protection of shear eroded cliff lines.

The Great Ocean Road is amazing to travel along, in parts you feel as though you are actually driving over the sea. My favourite spot is Apollo Bay, with its low-lying ranges and great ocean frontage. The two best tourist attractions are the Otway National Park & the Cape Otway Light Station. Otway National Park offers the Otway Fly walk, an engineering marvel that offers a suspended steel walkway that takes you through and above an ancient rainforest. On our way back to Apollo Bay we took a small detour out to Cape Otway Light Station, the oldest working Light Station in Australia. It is really well priced – a really magic experience.

From Apollo Bay the road takes you to the most photographed part of the Great Ocean Road, the 12 Apostles. When we arrived I understood why it was so popular, the walk under the road to the viewing platforms is relatively short, and when catching your first glimpse of the rough, rugged coastline you can’t help being taken back by its beauty. From here, we headed a couple of km down the road to another famous landmark – Loch Ard Gorge. I was even more impressed with this phenomenal piece of natural architecture. Loch Ard Gorge also offers an amazing inland blowhole, which is set back approximately 200 meters from the ocean. Loch Ard Gorge is definitely a not-to-be missed natural attraction.
