The sprawling, bustling Chinese industrial city of Shenzhen is probably
not the ideal background for one of the most comprehensive golf
complexes on the globe. But if you venture out of the city you will
stumble across an oasis for golfers, where everything is tailored to
the golfer’s needs, from accommodation through to the courses, clubs
house, bars and restaurants and the many events that are held there,
including the Omega World Cup.
Recently awarded by Business Traveller Magazine China, Mission Hills
was first established in 1994, with the opening of the Jack Nicklaus
World Cup Course, and like many things in China, was designed to be the
biggest and the best from the beginning – check the Guinness Book of
Records and Mission Hills is there as the world’s largest golf complex
with 12 signature courses.
Courses were designed by the who’s who of the international golf scene
including Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Jumbo Ozaki, Nick Faldo, Ernie
Els, Vijay Singh, David Duval, Jose-Maria Olazabal, David Leadbetter
and Annika Sorenstam. As well as the stunning courses, there is also a
64-bay floodlit driving range, complemented by two natural turf ranges
with multi-tiered playing surfaces and the club is home to China’s only
David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
Of course, you can’t be expected to swing away all day – Mission Hills
has a 315-room hotel attached to the 27,600sqm clubhouse so it will
never be far from beer to bed. The club not only boasts the largest
pro-shop in Asia, there is also a badminton hall, swimming pool and
snooker tables for that post-dinner cigar after dining in one of the
seven restaurants which include Chinese, Japanese and international
cuisine.
And for when all this activity starts to get the better of you, it’s
time to head to the Mission Hills Spa, where you can release the
stresses and strains of your body and soul with a range of world-class
treatments.
