With world-class golf, top-rated wineries, breathtaking scenery and a
full selection of family-friendly activities, Tasmania’s historic
Launceston is a perfect destination for families, couples and lone
adventurers alike.
The traditional first-stop/must-see attraction in Launceston is the beautiful Cataract Gorge . Featuring the world’s longest single-span chairlift, Cataract Gorge offers scenic walking tracks, breathtaking views from a nerve-testing suspension bridge, and even a kid’s playground and swimming facility.
In the city, families will revel in the City Park, where you can visit the Japanese Macaque Monkey enclosure, ride the park’s kiddie train, or take in the natural beauty of some of the most beautiful flora in the world. And when Mum isn’t looking, Dad can sneak over to the nearby J.Boag & Son’s brewery for a quick tour of (arguably) Tasmania’s best beers.
About 90 minutes from Launceston, near the scenic Cradle Mountain, sits Tasmazia - a wacky and thoroughly enjoyable hedge-maze facility. Reputedly the world’s largest maze complex, Tasmazia offers 8 separate mazes that will delight kids and adults alike. The site also houses the Village of Lower Crackpot – a 1/5 scale town filled with hilarity and adventure at every corner. (Our 5-year-olds absolutely loved Tasmazia. An absolute must-visit!)
Seahorse World
Another top highlight for families is the award-winning Seahorse World – a fully-operational breeding farm and aquarium dedicated to the preservation of the seahorse. 50 minutes north of Launceston, Seahorse World leads the world in research and development of wild seahorses, and boasts the world’s first successful breeding program of wild seahorses in captivity. The guided tours offer fascinating insight into the world of these mysterious animals, with a feeding on every tour.
For golfers, one of the newest attractions in the area is Barnbougle Dunes Golf Course , in nearby Bridport. Recently rated the #1 public golf course in Australia (#35 in the world) the course is gaining notoriety across the globe for its superb layout, awe-inspiring scenery and rugged playability. Finally, no trip to Launceston would be complete without a wander of the picturesque Tamar Valley, featuring a variety of top wineries, nature reserves, quaint villages, historic lighthouses, grand old sailing ships, and maybe even a few penguins and seals along the way!
