Beautiful Bintan On a recent family trip to Singapore, we discovered one of those 'hidden gems' that come about only a few times in your life.Bintan Island, Indonesia, is a short 45-minute ferry ride from Singapore, but it seems a world away from the city's hustle and bustle. With white sand beaches, gentle breezes flowing through the palm trees, and jungle surrounds, it's like one of those desert island fantasies has come true. Nestled on the northern coast of Bintan Island, the Club Med Bintan Resort is the perfect spot to enjoy everything the island has to offer. Club Med Pool If you’ve never experienced a Club Med holiday, do yourself a favour and give it a go. Especially if you have kids. The free Kids Club is an absolute dream, allowing parents to “Drop-and-run” for children from ages 2-17. With a full schedule each day (9am-5:30pm & 6:45pm-9pm), the kids will have no trouble keeping busy. From Archery, to beach/pool play, to Circus School, and even nightly stage shows and concerts, there is something for everyone. For parents, there is also a full selection of activities, including watersports, SCUBA diving, tennis/squash, Yoga, aerobics and a fantastic spa. For golf lovers, it's only a 5-minute ride to the amazing Ria Bintan Golf Club -- one of the most beautiful and playable golf courses in all of Asia. Of course, you could also opt to just sit in a hammock all day with a good book, cool beverage and the gentle ocean breezes. Circus School Best of all, it’s an all-inclusive resort. All your food, drinks and activities are included. (The ability to leave your room without needing your wallet may feel quite foreign at first, but you’ll get used to it.)I’ll admit, I was a bit sceptical of the Club Med-type holiday at first. I had visions of hyperactive ‘Activity Coordinators’ urging me to play Bingo, or overindulgent buffets piled high with assembly-line fried chicken. But my visions were way off base. While the hard-working and tireless staff are certainly the most accommodating and friendly bunch I’ve ever seen, we were pretty much left to our own devices – able to come and go (or Bingo!) as we pleased. And the food selections were surprisingly good -- with a different theme each day ranging from French, to Chinese, to Italian and countless other regions. And, of course, the kids were well catered for – with all the obligatory pizza/nuggets/burgers/fruit selections to guarantee they will find something they like. Cheeky Monkey The rooms at Club Med Bintan Island are spacious, comfortable and relaxing. Having recently been renovated, the rooms feature all the modern amenities like wireless internet access (but hey, why not give the computer a holiday as well), flat-screen TVs, amazing views and anything else your heart desires. Our ground-floor room even featured a nice balcony -- which happened to be a favourite resting spot for one of the local monkeys, who are a friendly (and bold) bunch. One even helped himself to our platter of fruit, which brought no end of delight to our 6-year old kids.If you’re looking for a true “Island Escape” that combines golf, relaxation and plenty of excitement, then Club Med Bintan Island is the perfect place for you.
